Every year I try a lot of different gear: samplers, grooveboxes, synths, and other tools that push my beatmaking workflow into new ground. While there were plenty of contenders this year, one device surprised me the most: the Yamaha SEQTRAK.

First Impressions
I’ll be honest, I had some mixed feelings when I first got it. I was hoping for a bit more from the sampler side of things, especially when compared to other devices in the same range. But once I stopped trying to make it something it’s not, I discovered what it really excels at.
An Incredible “Ideation Station”
The SEQTRAK is perfect for quickly capturing ideas. It’s one of the most intuitive grooveboxes I’ve used in years. You’ve got drums on one side, synth and sampler tracks on the other, and a workflow that just flows. Within minutes you can sketch out a full idea without menu-diving or setup time.
That speed makes it ideal for those moments of inspiration when you don’t want to open a DAW or wire up a bigger setup. I’ve found myself turning to it whenever I want to start something from scratch and often those sketches end up becoming full tracks later.
While the SEQTRAK might not be the deepest sampler out there, it is an in credibly powerful groovebox with plenty of sonic chops to quickly become one of my favorite tools for starting ideas fast. If you’re looking for something lightweight, portable, and genuinely fun to use, this might be the one to check out. Interested in trying the SEQTRAK?
