How I Made a Kick Drum Without Using Samples on the SP404 MK2

The SP404 MK2 is known as a powerful sampler. But when Roland added the Sound Generator a couple of years ago, I think a lot of people, including myself, treated it more like a bonus feature than something you could build an entire track around.
Recently, I challenged myself to make a complete beat without loading a single sample into the SP404 MK2. Every synth, every drum, every sound would come from the internal Sound Generator. I expected the melodic sounds to be fairly straightforward since I've covered making basses, leads, and pads before. The real challenge was the drums, especially the kick drum. After a lot of experimenting, resampling, and sound design, I ended up with a kick that was surprisingly usable, and along the way I learned a lot about just how capable the Sound Generator can be.
Start with Three Simple Waveforms

Like most kick drums, the foundation starts with the low end. For that, I began with a simple sine wave. A sine wave provides the sub frequencies and body of the kick, but on its own it sounds far too clean and doesn't have much attack.
To add a little more character, I layered in a pulse (square) wave. This adds harmonic content and helps the kick cut through a mix without completely changing its fundamental tone.
Finally, I added a Noise 2 oscillator. This ended up being one of the biggest discoveries during my testing. I found Noise 2 gave the kick just enough high-frequency click to help define the transient without becoming overly harsh. At this stage everything still sounded pretty terrible, but that's completely normal. The interesting part comes later.
Don't Worry About Perfecting Each Sound
One mistake I made early on was spending too much time adjusting envelopes and levels before merging the oscillators together.
After some testing, I realized the Merge Sample function on the SP ignores most of those edits anyway. Envelope settings, pitch adjustments, and other tweaks largely disappear during the merge process, so there's very little benefit in perfecting each oscillator individually.
Instead, I found it much easier to merge the three sounds first, using the sine wave as the dominant source, the pulse slightly lower in volume, and just enough Noise 2 to add attack. Once everything is combined into a single sample, that's when it makes sense to begin shaping the sound.
Shape the Envelope

After merging the oscillators, the sound still doesn't resemble a kick drum very much. The biggest transformation comes from the envelope.
A very short hold combined with a carefully adjusted release immediately starts pulling the merged waveform into something much more percussive. The goal isn't necessarily to copy an acoustic kick drum, but to create a punchy electronic kick that works well in a mix.
Small adjustments to the release made a much bigger difference than I expected, especially once I knew additional processing was coming later.
SP404 MK2 Effects Are Where the Kick Comes Alive
The envelope gets you close, but the effects are what really make the kick feel finished.
I started with the Isolator to emphasize the low frequencies while carving out some of the mids. From there, Super Filter helped tighten the sound even further by focusing the low-end energy and adding just a touch of resonance.
Finally, I ran everything through the 303 Vinyl Sim and Warm Saturator. The Vinyl Sim added compression and grit, while Warm Saturator introduced extra drive and weight that helped the kick feel much fuller than the original oscillators ever could on their own.
None of these effects were particularly extreme by themselves. Instead, they worked together to gradually transform three very basic waveforms into something that actually felt musical.
Resampling Is the Secret Ingredient
Once I was happy with the processing, I resampled the kick and turned all of the effects back off. This is one of my favorite workflows on the SP404 MK2. Rather than keeping effects active all the time, resampling bakes them directly into the sound. That frees up your effect buses for the rest of the project while also giving you a finished drum that can be used like any other sample.
After resampling, I made one final envelope adjustment to tighten everything up, and the kick was ready to use in the beat.
The Recipe Is Just the Starting Point
The most surprising part of this experiment wasn't that I managed to build a usable kick drum without samples. It was realizing how much depth Roland packed into the SP404 MK2's Sound Generator.
I'm sure there are even better ways to approach this. Ring modulation, different waveform combinations, more aggressive filtering, or even adding subtle reverb before resampling could all push the sound in different directions.
That's ultimately what made this challenge so much fun. The goal wasn't to prove the SP404 MK2 could replace dedicated synthesizers or drum machines. It was simply to explore an underrated feature and see how far it could be pushed. Sometimes those creative limitations end up teaching more than taking the obvious route.
