Even after four years with the SP404 MK2, I’m still uncovering hidden features that change how I use it.
Recently, I discovered something incredibly useful: quick pad mutes, or the ability to mute sample pads "live" in pattern playback.
How to Access SP404 MK2 Live Mutes

It’s a bit of a bizarre button combo (like many SP shortcuts):
Press Shift + Reverse while in the samples view
Now, you can mute and unmute pads live
You can press Shift + Reverse + Remain to keep the quick mutes menu open
This means you don’t always have to create tons of different patterns to introduce variation. Instead, you can just mute parts of a pattern in real time.
For example:
Keep your drums muted until the second half of the sequence
Drop out the kick for a breakdown, then bring it back in
Add in melodies and new sounds with every repeat of the pattern
Create arrangement changes on the fly without resampling or copying patterns
Use Cases and Why it's Awesome
One of my favorite features on the newer Roland P6 were its fast muting abilities to allow for "live performance" of the pattern you're working on. I always thought it weird that the more expensive and feature packed SP lacked it... but I was wrong, thankfully. Quick mutes give the SP404 MK2 a whole new level of flexibility for both beatmaking and live performance. You can build tension, create transitions, or simply jam with fewer patterns and more spontaneity.
It’s honestly wild that it took me this long to stumble on it, but that’s part of the fun with the SP, the more time you spend with it, the more it reveals. What's your favorite hidden or lesser known SP feature? Let us know in the comments :)
