Roland P6 Sample Chopping Trick: Using Parameter Locks as Slice Points (Better Than Auto Chop)

Did you know the Roland P-6 has a hidden way to chop samples more precisely than it's Auto Chop function? While the built-in “Chop” mode is quick, it’s limited—you can’t manually move slice points. But with a clever use of parameter locks, you can turn the step sequencer into a powerful slicing tool. In this post, I’ll show you how to use parameter locks as slice points to get hands-on control over your chops, even without a waveform view. This chopping method will also work on any device that has per step parameter locks (for sample start/end positions) for it's sequencer. Gear like the Elektron Digitakt II would work the same way, or any DAW with automation.

How It Parameter Lock Sample Chopping Works on Roland P-6

On the Roland P6, Chop Mode auto-divides your sample into slices, but it doesn’t let you fine-tune slice positions. That’s where parameter locks come in.

By using a sample pads step sequencer and programming steps in the sequencer, you can use parameter locks to move the start point on each step, essentially creating custom slices on any step of the sequencer.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Load Your Sample onto a pad

  2. Program Steps on the sequencer (any length pattern)

  3. Press the Record button while in the step sequencer, then hold a programmed step

  4. Adjust the Start Point for that step.

  5. Repeat for each step to create different chops.

🎧 Tip: You’ll hear the audio cue of your slice as you adjust, even though the P6 doesn’t display waveforms.

Once done, each step plays a different portion of the sample, like manual slicing, but sequenced.

Why It’s Useful

  • Great for precise chopping without external editing

  • Works like an Elektron-style slice chain

  • Adds rhythmic variation when combined with per-step velocity, pitch, or filter locks

  • Perfect for loop rearrangement or turning one sample into multiple parts

Combine this with resampling and the Granular Engine or Lo-Fi sample rates for even more creative sound design. The P6’s sequencer lets you layer effects and motion in a way most budget samplers can’t.

Even though the Roland P6 doesn’t show waveforms, parameter locks open up powerful new chopping workflows. Try sequencing your chops with different slice points and effects to create unique grooves from a single loop.
