As a music producer, there’s nothing quite like the freedom of taking your gear outside and making beats in new, inspiring environments. Whether it’s a park, a beach, or even your own backyard, the fresh air and change of scenery can spark creativity and push your music in new directions. In this post, I’ll show you how I took my SP404 MK2 to the poolside to craft some unique beats, demonstrating that with the right setup, you can make music anywhere. If you're curious about portable music production or want to learn more about creating on the go, keep reading for all the tips and tricks you need to know.
Why the SP404 MK2 is Perfect for Outdoor Beat-Making
The SP404 MK2 is an ideal choice for outdoor beat-making. Its compact size, battery power option, and built-in effects make it perfect for creating music wherever inspiration strikes. Here’s why the SP404 MK2 stands out:
Portability: Weighing just a few pounds, the SP404 MK2 is easy to carry around in a backpack. It’s compact and durable, perfect for any outdoor adventure.
Battery-Powered Flexibility: With the ability to run on batteries, the SP404 MK2 frees you from needing an electrical outlet. This makes it perfect for locations like parks, beaches, or, in my case, the poolside. It can also run on a power bank using USB-C.
Built-In Effects, Sound Generation, and Sampling Capabilities: The SP404 MK2 comes loaded with a variety of effects and powerful sampling capabilities. This allows you to create complete tracks without needing a laptop or additional gear.
Essential Gear for Making Beats Outdoors
Before heading out, it’s important to pack the right gear to ensure a smooth music-making session. Here’s what you need to bring for outdoor beat-making:
SP404 MK2: The star of the show.
Portable Speaker or Headphones: I prefer headphones so I can focus on the music while outside
Backpack or Bag: A sturdy bag to carry your gear in.
Power Bank: You can use this instead of batteries in the SP, but that does take up the USB-C port, which means you can't use the next essential.
Recorder: You can either resample to a pad on the SP to record the set, or use an iPad, Laptop or Handheld Recorder to get the audio. With a laptop or iPad the easiest method is to use the USB-C to power the SP and send audio to a DAW (just for capturing the audio of the set). This way power and audio are all on piece of gear
Weather Protection: Covers or cases to protect your gear from unexpected weather changes.
Choosing the Right Location for Outdoor Music Production
Location is key when it comes to outdoor beat-making. You want a spot that’s inspiring but also practical. Here are a few things to consider when choosing your location:
Noise Level: Pick a spot where you won’t be interrupted by too much noise or distractions.
Accessibility: Make sure the location is easy to get to, especially if you’re carrying a lot of gear.
Comfort and Shade: Bring a mat or chair for comfort, and choose a shaded area to protect both you and your gear from the sun.
Camera Position & Lighting: Set up angles that show your gear and consider lighting and placement of the sun. It's best to film a "test" shot and see how it looks on a larger screen like an iPad or computer if possible.
For my poolside session, I chose a spot that was quiet and had plenty of space to set up my equipment. I also made sure there was some shade for better lighting and angles.
Creating Beats Anywhere: My Process with the SP404 MK2
For my latest beatset, once I found the perfect spot and set up my gear by the pool, it was time to get creative. Here's a breakdown of my process:
Setting Up the SP404 MK2: I quickly set up my SP404 MK2 on a portable table and connected my headphones. I made sure everything was stable and protected from any splashes.
Using Pattern Sequencing and Effects: For the set, I rehearsed several songs from my latest release that I could mix together using the SP404 MK2's pattern sequencer to lay down the foundations of my beats. The built-in effects allowed me to add depth and textures over the patterns.
Chromatic Mode and Sound Selection: For this session, I focused on using chromatic mode, which allowed me to play samples melodically. This added a level of improvisation I could vary over the patterns.
